Hello there, ladies and gents. This is my first post after only being approved for registration (didn't realise confirmation mails went to the Junk folder - only myself to blame, really), and I arrive with a query.
I attended last year's FF and, like this year, I'll only be going for one day, and my preference for the Sunday meant I missed out on The Dead. When the details for 2011 emerged I saw that it was returning this year, which I presumed was something of a victory lap for a well-recieved flick. I've since discovered that it's going to be screened with commentary by the Ford brothers, which I should imagine would be fun for anyone who went last year, but I'm wondering how intrusive it would be for n00bs? Would you even consider watching a film for the first time with a commentary? If anyone's in the same predicament as me, I'd like to know what you think. I have a day pass so TrollHunter would be an option - if I hadn't already seen it.

Personally I'd prefer to see the film first, then watch it with the commentary. Novel idea though, to do the director's commentary live. :)

I saw The Dead last year and really enjoyed it. There's quite a lot of tension in places which may be somewhat spoilt by the live commentary, but then the actual experience of watching a film with live commentary is something that you'll rarely get to experience so I'd put that as a bigger plus than watching the film without commentary.

I saw the Hot Fuzz DVD launch at the Prince Charles cinema a few years back where the cast and crew sat in the front row and gave a full running commentary during the whole film. Yes, I'd seen Hot Fuzz already so it may have been different if I was going in fresh but the actual experience of being there during the commentary was a great movie-watching highlight of mine.

Hmm, you make a good point. I'm reminded of when I saw Hitchcock's Blackmail broadcast in Leicester Square or Covent Garden (can't remember which) a few years ago. It's probably not the "ideal" situation in which to watch a film (especially when most people were standing), but how often does one get the chance to watch a film outdoors in these post-drive-in times, and not even at an open air cinema, just in a shopping district?! The novelty now sounds rather enticing, and I don't really have anything else to do, so hell yeah! Not long now...

My take on day four of FrightFest. Potentially the most interesting day so far of the festival.

A summary of the five days and a few points to consider.

Also a curious anecdote that was a direct by product of FrightFest 2011
