The Green Inferno

Post by bounce08 »

Didn't disappoint on the gore front, despite 90% of the gore happenning in the space of 5 minutes (the scene involving Jonah). Some laughs along the way too and good one liners. Felt very short. What I liked was the very in your face editing style and random shot choices, nothing was hidden for the audience and some decent practical effects by Greg Nicotero. Not as good as Hostel (comparison purely due to the director not the plot). Felt the ending was a bit unnecessary and abrupt. Aside from a couple of scenes, this was a bit of a let down and not up to the hype but definately watchable and a very daring film with a message or two up its sleeve.

7/10 - enjoyed this one - particularly the endless betrayals. Ant sequence didn't make any sense with a clothed victim. Expected more to be made of their disguises (yellow suits) when the villagers saw them.

Decent as a visceral horror experience, but felt the message of the film was muddled and Roth never got a handle on how to depict the tribe and avoid accusations of insensitivity.

But, the entrance into the village was genuinely unnerving.

Shamlessly posting my review here!

I didn't get why the sole survivor lied at the end when being questioned.

Think it was because she didn't want to jeopardise a way of life that had survived for hundreds of years and was now being threatened.

Despite the fact they tried to circumcise her and ate her friends. I liked the film, but it's viewpoints were definitely muddled.

Very poor stuff. It presents itself as a political commentary on student activism and the relationship between the developed and undeveloped world. There is plenty of material that could have been mined for commentary, but it doesn't really have a political viewpoint, more a cynical nihilism in which everybody is either selfish or evil, and it's not a developed and layered nihilism, more the lazy nihilism of a freshman college student annoyed at being woken up by protesters. It's a nihilism that sits uneasily against some low-brow comic relief that is introduced in the second half. The film also never finds any way to mitigate the problematic depiction of an Amazonian tribe as evil and violent. They're essentially just there to present a threat to the protagonists, and Female Genital Mutilation is just used as an additional source of jeopardy. The highlight of the film is the gory limb-lopping and eye-gouging cannibalistic ceremony, but most of the other deaths are uninteresting and it didn't deliver on providing awful fates to the most deserving.
Spoiler:
The people I most wanted to see get eaten were Alejandro and his girlfriend and she died relatively quickly and he had some undetermined fate
It's interesting that although Roth was crucial in inaugurating the torture-porn genre, horror seems to have moved on and this film feels like a backwards step. 3/10

I don't think Eli Roth's a stupid man, but he seems unable to resist making stupid films. This had its moments but really didn't need the dopey characters and juvenile comic relief.

Roth's last few projects mainly seem to have been opportunities for him to do a bit of travelling in South America.

I can't say that cannibal movies are really my thing .... Or in fact Eli Roth movies ....But The idea of "do-gooding tree-huggers " ( let's ignore the fact of the ulterior motives for this thought) getting killed and eaten by the very people they're trying to save is appealing ... Albeit in a twisted kind of way :) Highly disappointed the up-himself ringleader and his girlfriend didn't get sliced, diced and barbecued.

Pales in comparison to "Cannibal Holocaust" but an entertaining film in its own right. More humour than the aforementioned classic, and less shocking, but there are a number of squirmy and gory sequences. 8/ 10

***Spoilers***

I did feel the movie missed a trick at the end as Samantha could have reappeared (it wasn't explained what happened to her was it?) or even had Justine being pregnant!
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

I thought Samantha
Spoiler:
was the one they were fed in the little bowls - nothing happened to her on camera but the fragments of tattoos the tribe were trying on were hers, weren't they? She had a pretty fair compliment of crappy tribal type numbers if memory serves, and it was seeing/recognising the tattooed skin in the bottom of her bowl that drove the identikit bimbo one smash it and do herself in, like :).
Or that's what I thought happened, although I admit it lost my interest after the main gory bit. I did think the plane crash sequence was good.

Ah, that makes sense, thanks for that!

Glad it wasn't just me who didn't spot the significance of the tattoos.

Thanks for clearing that up about Samantha - I did wonder what that was in the bowls that was so horrifying, so now that makes far more sense!
