The Rusalka

A limited amount of horror sequences in this one, but it is a very well told tale of love and loss. I'm not sure about the name change to The Siren though when there are already a number of horror films released with that title - I thought the original name stood out more. 7.5 / 10

Automata

A bit of a Gothic curio this one. I loved the mythology and the Infernal Princess herself but at times it seems a bit like a children's programme from 30 years ago, albeit one with some very uncomfortable sexualised scenes! 7 / 10

Finale

A good old-fashioned stalk and torture flick that didn't really live up to its confrontational billing beforehand but nevertheless had some suitably horrific moments. The latest in a long line to have an absurdist, "comic" villain and I'm still yet to be convinced this really works in this type of movie. I thought the two female leads did well and had a good dynamic between them. 7.5 / 10

The Witch, Part I: The Subversion

More of a
Spoiler:
superhero origin flick
than a horror, but there is no shortage of gore. After a blood-splattered opening it changes into a teen movie with heart, before shifting gears to the violent, action-filled second half, including a rug-pulling reveal
Spoiler:
that our heroine may not be as innocent as she appears.
Roll on part 2! 8 / 10
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Freaks

Another film with plenty of heart, revolving around a young girl (the actress is terrific) and her bizarre relationship with her father.
Spoiler:
I'm not sure about the programming of two superhero type of movies back-to-back, but fortunately it didn't really harm either.

Spoiler:
I liked the ambiguity of who was really good and who was really evil
and my only real quibble was whether some of the characters were
Spoiler:
too overpowered by the end, which did also raise some questions about events earlier in the film.

8 / 10

Given there were some technical difficulties (well, I assumed that was what they were), I wonder if there will be a means of watching the shorts again? I did feel sorry for the film makers who were affected. Indeed the quality of them was so good I'm sure there will be people who will want to see them again, even the ones that were not affected by the technical issues the first time around.

As someone who has atttended frightfest events since the early days, thought this years Frightfest Glasgow was one of the best in a long time. Some really great films. 1.Lords Of Chaos 2.Finale 3.The Witch 4.Here Comes Hell. All bangers!

Great company, and thanks to the organisers Paul,Alan, Greg and Ian for another excellent weekend.
