So for me see Fantasy Film Fest Berlin ist over. here are some thoughts on the films I saw.
Bite - following the notes coming out of Fantasia I had high expectations on this that unfortunately went unfulfilled. The problem is the script and/or editing which have resulted Ina very linear narratives. A shame as somewhere in this mess is a good film that could have been saved by a stronger edit.
Body - I liked this one, sure it's been done before but it's always good to see how quickly things escalate when one bad decision follows another.
Demonic - above average straight to video fare.
Frankenstein - oh man. Sub-six firm philosophy, I guess many will argue that it's saved by the strong central performances. although one mans strong performance is another's overacting.
Howl - I will see this again in Hanburg next weekend, so will reserve judgement.
Nightfare - I really liked this. Although it suffers from a tacked on fourth act which tries to explain the motivation of our friendly taxi driver.
Nina Forever - I will see this next weekend
Rabid Dogs - my favorite film of the festival. A must see.
Scherzo Diabolica - I liked it. Many won't
Stung - this was made locally so around 30 of the cast and crew were in attendance. indeed the film has its origins in a script competition organized by the festival. It's fairly derivative fun. I liked it.
Some kind of Hate - my last film of the festival, and one which sums up my view of the 2015 genre scene. A lot of good films, few bad films, but as of yet nothing truly special. Hopefully that will all have changed in two weeks time.
