JqJTGG5aLSS500MOON Blu Ray Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Available 16/11/09

Duncan Jones stunning feature debut MOON arrives on the Blu Ray format in a crisp, beautiful and detailed transfer which adroitly captures and accentuates the films stunning cinematography and set designs.

With a brilliant Oscar worthy multi layered central performance from Sam Rockwell and a truly haunting and incredible score by Clint Mansell that is presented here with loss-less sound in DTS, this is a must buy presentation for all fans of adult oriented Science Fiction.

The disc is perfectly fleshed out with a host of extras including a 16 minute on set making of featurette, world premiere Q and A footage from the Sundance Film Festival, two commentary tracks with Jones and his producers and behind the scenes team, another Q and A from a screening at the Science Centre and a short feature on creating the visual FX for the film. Finally the long overdue disc presentation of Jones first short film WHISTLE which we world premiered at FrightFest waaay back in 2002.

pMg8bRLSL500AA240MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D Lions Gate Films Available now

The latest 3-D re-tread of a past horror picture is MY BLOODY VALENTINE. This feature includes the requisite boobs and blood that are expected from an R rated horror film. It is an enjoyable, albeit slight shocker and the disc features some nice extras including commentary, making of featurette, extended and deleted scenes – including an alternate ending and a gag reel.

The unfortunate thing with the new wave of 3-D digital cinema releases is that the joy of the cinematic experience cannot be replicated in the home environment. So although you get two pairs of 3-D glasses within the package these are the old style red and blue lenses. Therefore the image is nowhere near that which can be experienced in the movie theatre.

To this end Lions Gate also include the standard 2-D version of the film as well, which ironically is a much sharper presentation than its 3-D equivalent. Perhaps the next wave of 3-D home televisions, which we caught a glimpse of during our recent trip to Austin’s Fantastic Fest, will enable the disc producers to showcase the new 3-D technology correctly for the home viewer.

Keep watching.

Paul.
