Every week Evrim Ersoy brings you all the latest news, trailers and gossip from genre films all around the world as well as discoveries from the archives.

The Horror – The Horror – The Final Round-up Before FrightFest!

Hello dear readers! The time is nearly upon us – we will all finally be able to gorge ourselves to our hearts’ content on horror films for an entire weekend! But before the festival , let me, Evrim Ersoy, be your guide one last time on the horror circuit – to show you films, to show you trailer, to relay you news, to give you gossip on stuff that just might make it to next year’s Festival!

Kelvin Tong’s Singaporean thriller with a supernatural edge will finally be hitting English friendly DVD in the coming months. The film concerns Rookie Sergeant Lee (Yue) is injured in a shoot-out and is assigned to the dubious- sounding Miscellaneous Affairs Department (MAD). There, he is paired up with Inspector Wong (Cheng), a jaded and alcoholic veteran who explains that MAD's role is to answer supernatural calls. Wong explains MAD's rule number one - there are no ghosts. For every seemingly-inexplicable phenomenon, there is a corresponding scientific and rational explanation. MAD begins investigating a string of bizarre teenage suicides... impossible suicides, unless the victims were possessed. As Lee and Wong follow the clues, they realize something sinister is heading their way. It looks interesting and seems to have a nice edge on the usual Asian ghost thriller – watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afhe4hvgye0&feature=related

Unexpected news – Lars Von Trier’s new film is going to be an out and out horror flick. Titled Antichrist , the the film stars Willem Dafoe and Charlotte as a grieving couple, mourning the death of their child, who retreat to an isolated cabin. Anders Thomas Jensen who was behind Efter brylluppet (After The Wedding, 2006) and Adams ębler (Adam’s Apples, 2005) penned the script.

elIs everyone ready for the opening movie, Eden Lake? The advance word seems to be nothing but positive – and to add to the excitement , here’s the exclusive UK Quad poster revealed:

Dosn't that look nice?

We got ‘Dance Of The Dead’ last minute but there’s no reason why it should not get the usual Frightfest warm welcome and love –is there? Here’s the age –restricted trailer to whet your appetites: http://uk.media.dvd.ign.com/media/142/14272394/vids_1.html

SleepawaycampI know a few weeks back, one of our keen-eyed festers linked the trailer for the official sequel to ‘Sleepaway Camp’ – well here’s even more reason to get excited – a h-res image for the DVD cover. Now although ‘Sleepaway Camp’ might not be one of the finest slashers out there , it still retains a very special place in this writer’s heart. With its’ offbeat tone, extremely tight clothing and killer script, it certainly stands head above shoulder over some of the more average entries in the genre.

I don’t know if any of you caught ‘Nightmare Detective’ last year from director Shinya Tsukamato of Tetsuo: Iron Man fame but it was everything one has learnt to expect the director’s work to be: nightmarish, weird, brilliant and infuriating in equal measure. Well, hot on the heels of the first films, he’s got a sequel going and a trailer has leaked onto the net recently: if it intrigues you at all, there’s plenty of time to catch the first one before moving on to the upcoming sequel. Here’s a link to the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkmvTSZZd4o&feature=related

InivitationonlyAnd finally – Taiwan has its’ first slasher movie! ‘Invitation Only’ revolves around five friends who arrive at a party, fully unaware that the special night is just a cover for an evening of torture and murder and is due for release in Taiwan , in November. Here’s the poster to whet your appetite:

And that’s all for now! Be sure to come and say ‘Hello’ during FrightFest- I will be there firmly rooted in my seat for the entire 5 day period! It’ll be great to meet new ‘Festers during the festival and discuss the films we have seen.

Until then

Yours Sincerely

Evrim ‘ The Duke’ Ersoy
