The Horror! The Horror! - 8th December
First, let me start off by apologising for the lengthy separation: it has possibly been the busiest autumn ever – and in an unfortunate turn of events I found myself unable to update this column even though it was in the back of my mind at all times. However, let me say that I am back, raring to go with bigger and better news than ever before.
Let’s start with some news you are probably aware of: The 3-D Remake of ‘My Bloody Valentine’ is hitting our shores on January 16th. However what you might not know is that on the same day, Lionsgate are finally releasing an UNCUT version of the classic 1981 version!
For those who have yet to experience the pleasures of ‘My Bloody Valentine’, it is one of the more solid and entertaining entries in the slasher cycle. However, over time, it has become one of the holy grails of the genre due to an uncut version simply not existing: and the studio REFUSING to incorporate the cut stuff back into the film.
Well it seems that the imminent arrival of the remake has kicked them into action and the DVD we all have been waiting for will finally arrive.
And on a lighter note, please take a look at the poster for the remake – it fell into my inbox a week ago or so and something about it captured my interest: it almost looks like they care about the movie – however I’m not falling into that particular trap again and ever caring about a remake.
New film from the Australian shores soon making its way over; ‘Lake Mungo’ is a first time effort by newcomer Joel Anderson and focuses on the accidental drowning of a 16-year-old girl. When her body is recovered, her grieving family buries her only to experience a series of strange and inexplicable events centered in and around their home. Profoundly unsettled, the Palmers seek the help of a psychic and parapsychologist who discovers that Alice led a secret, double life. A series of clues lead the family to Lake Mungo where Alice's secret past emerges.
Although the plot does not exactly sound like it might set the world alight anytime soon, the fact that it has been already picked up by an American remake by Vertigo Entertainment and Paramount Vintage might suggest that there is more to it than sees the eye.
You can catch a four-minute preview of it below:
I think all those at the all-nighter enjoyed themselves during the roller-coaster ride that was’ Hush’ – well here’s the Korean version!
Ok, so it might not exactly have the same plot but the look of upcoming Korean film ‘Truck’ is very similar to our thriller and they just might end up making the perfect companion piece.
The film focuses on Cheol-min who makes a living by working in the shipping business. He has a daughter suffering from a heart condition, and in need of surgery. To save his daughter, he urgently needs the tremendous amount of 60,000,000 won. To make this money, he gets involved in dangerous illegal gambling and barely saves his life by promising he will take care of body disposal for the gang. On his way to Gangwon-do where he intends to dump the bodies, he encounters a police van that had been in an accident, and ends up giving the police officer a ride. Although this situation is tense, events take a turn for the worse.
Next up we have a something a little more unique: ‘Rosencratz And Guildenstern are Undead’ is an off-beat comedy that focuses on Julian Marsh , an out of work lothario, who scores a break as the director of an off-Broadway play. The play is a bizarre adaptation of Hamlet written by a pale Romanian) who is actually a master vampire.
Sounding a bit like the horror version of the upcoming Steve Coogan comedy ‘Hamlet 2’ , ‘Rosencratz. And Guildenstern are Undead’ still could be just the horror-comedy we have been waiting for a while – take a look at the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9n9ks_PAJ0
Those who have seen ‘Not quite Hollywood’ know that this is the year of Ozploitation: so what better way to end this week’s column than with a trailer for the remake of ‘The Long Weekend’ – that classic from 1978? The remake stars James Caviziel and Claudia Karvan – and is directed by none other than Jamie Blanks. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VH34F6PD5Q
