Do you ever look at your DVD/Blu-ray collection and think, I’m glad I own all of these – but how many of them am I actually going to watch again. It’s very easy these days to over consume, the hype, the packaging, the special features, but how many of these titles do we really ‘need’ to own.

In my collection I would say the only true must owns are Robocop, the Star Wars films and maybe about 50 others. Then out of nowhere comes a film that ticks all the boxes and you find yourself watching it again in a space of 48 hours - here be the marvellous ‘Hunter Prey’.

I’ll be honest the title and the artwork didn’t exactly grab me but I thought I would give it ago, and frankly I’m very pleased I did.

Set on an alien planet (clearly inspired by sand dunes of ‘Tatooine’ in Star Wars) a transport vehicle carrying a dangerous prisoner crashes leaving the non-human soldiers with no contact to their home planet. The soldiers set up camp awaiting rescue, only to find their highly feared cargo has escaped. What starts as a need to survive soon becomes a recovery mission. The prisoner - now armed- picks off the soldiers one by one leaving only Commander Karza (Isaac C. Singleton Jr.) left to bring order to the disastrous assignment.

As the cat and mouse chase across the vast desert landscape intensifies, the commander of the mission comes face to face with his foe. The prisoner is a human and the last remaining of his species. We soon discover the Human race have been completely wiped out by the species initially seen as the heroes of the story.

When the human has the opportunity to take down the last of his pursuers but chooses not to, the commander is caught up in a battle between duty and morality. He is further compromised with the knowledge of the atrocities caused by his own people during the war with the human race.

Hunter Prey has nothing new to offer in the Sci-Fi genre, but what it does do is take you back to the great Sci-fi flicks of the 70’s and 80’s – much like Moon did in 2009. It creates a beautiful reminder of some of the simplicity that can be viewed on screen without the use of green screens and expensive special effects. By no means am I anti the use of visual effects in movies, but there is a nostalgia I felt from the moment Hunter Prey introduced its ‘desolate’ sand dunes framed by the beaming blue sky. Clearly the director Sandy Collora, famed for the brilliant ‘Batman: Dead end’, has waited his whole life to create his homage to the original Star Wars trilogy. And that is exactly what he’s done with a little bit of Enemy Mine thrown in for good measure.

This film is about 35 years too late to be seen as one of the greatest Sci-fi films of all time and it’s far from perfect, but if you fancy a little bit of old school nostalgia – I can hearterly recommend it. For me it was exactly what the doctor ordered and I can see myself watching it for a third time. It has cult hit written all over it and will transfer on to Blu-ray exceptionally well if given the chance. It’s just such a shame Hunter Prey will never get an outing on the big screen.

I’m still not sold on the film’s title but many a good film has carried a naff title - after all I love Beast master and that is a crap title too!

However don’t be put off by the name - as Shakespeare said a Rose by any other name would smell as sweet. If you liked Star Wars then this is one to watch.
