The keeper of all things that taste forgot, Nicola Clements will be blogging about anything & everything from T-shirts to bags to music soundtracks, books, novelties, film posters & banners and throwing in her own thoughts along the way.

2nd March 2009.

Welcome back readers to movie junk.

Its been some time since the last blog, a kaput laptop with the files on and generally being busy has kept me away from blogging, but jeez its nearly March and time is really flying by,so here's a blog that's been a while coming.

You know, I'm a simple soul. I don’t expect much for my money and time spent at the cinema, except to be entertained and that’s getting harder and harder these days. Judging by the current output of movies, but not just any movies, I mean game to film adaptations. If you had the misfortune to sit through Max Payne, then you know where I am coming from. Some jazzy posters and eye catching banners do not make this a film worth seeking out. So, I got to thinking as I do about just how many games have been brought to film. A quick look on wikipedia - here - soon brings a list of films in production and those languishing in production hell, which might not be a bad thing, judging by some of the past efforts.

supermariobrosSo, onwards and upwards as we take in some of the cinematic highlights of those games made into films. Who can forget the pairing of Bob Hoskins & John Leguizamo in Super Mario Bros., with Dennis Hopper. Then the virtual fighting world was in the cinemas kicking and screaming, with an almost triple bombardment of beat-em-ups as Billy and Jimmy arrived with Robert Patrick as the bad guy boss, in Double Dragon. JCVD arrived on the scene with Kylie Minogue in army uniform, battling M Bison and his henchman, in Streetfighter, a film so bad with sets so shoddy, it’s a shame that this was Raul Julia’s last film. And finally, Paul Anderson arrived with Mortal Kombat, which actually wasn’t that bad for its time, (I still have the soundtrack).

princeofpersiamovieposterAs the bucks flowed in then so did the film rights flow out to production companies as studios looked for the next big thing. If you ever watched Channel 4 on Sunday mornings in the early 90s then you would have caught the cartoon Earth Worm Jim, which came from a game, one of my favourite waste’s of time when at work, well that and the Get Smart TV series reruns. But when looking at that list the most popular amount of films has been Pokemon movies a phenomenon that makes no sense to adults. So what have we got to look forward to from the game to big screen, we will soon see Jake Gyllenhall as The Prince Of Persia, Gears of War? Halo? My money’s on a Grand Theft Auto movie, hopefully not directed by Uwe Boll! But lets go back and give some light to some of the games that just may have been overlooked.

secretofmonkeyislandboxfront1600x2011The Secret Of Monkey Island, how this hasn’t been adapted into a film leaves me scratching my head, pirates = money if only Renny Harlin, had waited for the right time cutthroat island would have been more successful, well it has to be better, than that dismal 3rd instalment of Pirates Of The Caribbean.

How about Indiana Jones and the Lost City of Atlantis, another game, that was far more fun playing, than watching the latest sequel last summer offered up. Or how about Sam Raimi returns to his evil dead roots and uses the title Evil Dead Regeneration.

indianajonesfateofatlantiscoverOr Another World from,Delphine Software a time travelling journey. Though im surprised not to see Beyond Good & Evil or PNO3, in some sort of production PNO3 especially, evil corporations cyber suits, Vanessa Schneider a mercenary.sounds like something the wachowskis would be doing,if they hadn't have done Speedracer or who knows they might do something equally obscure or successful, that will keep insurance ads busy with new tricks.

All those elements could lend itself to something worthy of spending your money on and before you know it you’ve paid your money and its too late, your sat down in the cinema, trying to keep your eyes open hoping to see something to keep you awake, meanwhile the film companies done a runner with your money, packed up their suitcase and scarped.

Damn conned again!

So that’s all for this junk instalment, till next time

Nicola.
