It's so good it's scary - The Guardian

The premiere event of the year for horror fans - Time Out

PostcardsfromAustin

25th September - Paul has been a busy boy, so I'm afraid you will have to put up with me for two days in a row. When I wrapped-up yesterday's postcard, I said I was off to see Hard Revenge Milly. Well that's what I did, and as it turned out Hard Revenge Milly was not one but two films. Both had the same title and cast. The director was in town for the screening and he had, so he claimed, prepared us a very special Japanese dish. As you can see from the picture on the left, he had a very unusual way of finishing it off. All very funny, but the true significance of it didn't become apparent until the end of the first film, by which time we had all eaten some of the dish. As it turned out the first of the two films was the best and I have to confess to nodding off in the middle of the second one. Paul who was with me and who had also nodded off just before the end woke up with the start and turned to me asking was it any good.

For the second film of the day it was back downtown to the Paramount for the big budget Zombieland. I have to say, and I don't know why, I was pre-proposed not to like the film. How wrong could I have been. I really enjoyed this. Funny with just the right amount of Gore and a fantastic cameo that I'm not going to tell you about because it would spoil the surprise, this is a must see. The film played gangbusters and interestingly many locals came out of the screening raving about it and claiming at last they had an American Shaun of the Dead. I'm not so sure it is, but well worth a watch never the less.

It was back on the shuttle buses to the Drafthouse, this time to support FrightFest favourite Jake West at his US premiere of Doghouse. A sold-out cinema thoroughly enjoyed the film with the majority staying for the Q&A after. Jake seemed to be very pleased with the films reaction. Talking to him the following day he was in good humour and looking forward to his UK DVD release early in October. The film has now sold all round the world and is Jake's most successful film to date.

Finally, it was on to the Meet the Japanese Party. Much fun was had; beer drunk, and we were entertained, though I'm not quite sure that's the right word, by many festivalgoers’ attempts at various songs at the karaoke machine.

Today I have the delights of Krabat, Jordan Barkers Duress, which I spoke about the other day, Mandrill the latest from the Chilean team that brought us Kiltro and Mirageman and secret screening number three. Widely rumoured to be the new Terry Gilliam film, we will see.

Until the next time…..

Ian.
