Directed by Rashane Limtrakul, Starring Jija Yanin, David Bueno, Patrick Tang, Roongtawan Jindasing, Nui Sandang. Action/Martial Arts, Thailand, 109 minutes.
DVD and Blu-ray UK release date: Available Now - Cine-Asia (Certificate 15) (sub-titled)
Jija Yanin (Chocolate) stars as a down-on-her-luck musician who's been abandoned by her family, rejected by her boyfriend, and left to find her own way. She meets a band of strangers, who introduce her to the art of “Meyraiyuth”, a new form of martial arts, the power of which is fuelled by alcohol, pain and sorrow. Once her training is complete, the group seek to bring down the notorious Jaguar gang which is capturing and trafficking young ladies for prostitution.
The film opens with Deu (Yanin) drunk, depressed and alone. Fortunately Deu narrowly misses a much worse fate (becoming the latest victim of the Jaguar gang), when a mysterious stranger called Sanim (Patrick Tang) rescues her from their clutches. Subsequently taken in by Sanim and his band of friends (Pig, Dog, and Bull), and with nothing left to lose, Deu decides to train with them to practice and learn Meyraiyuth, which is a cross between drunken kung-fu and hip hop, and join in their quest.
Along the way, Deu finds out that she is a ‘special target’, as she has inside of her a powerful pheromone much sought after by the Jaguar gang. It also transpires that Sanim’s girlfriend and love of his life (Pie) has been captured by the gang, and she also possesses this pheromone. Sanim, Deu, and the band of friends mission is to seek revenge, rescue Pie and bring down the Jaguar gang forever.
When Deu is ready and accepted into the group, they decide to use her as bait and allow her to be captured in order to help the friends track down the Jaguar’s underground hideaway. Once inside the lair, they come across the Jaguar’s henchmen and the powerful she-boss of the gang (played by the scary looking female Thai bodybuilder Roongtawan Jindasing) who is unfortunately more than a match for our protagonists.
This is Jija Yanin’s follow up to ‘Chocolate’ and is as equally enjoyable. The movie has lots of kung-fu action and fight scenes peppered throughout the film, and whilst none of the combat in itself is particularly original, it is exciting to watch, and the whole movie is fast paced and entertaining. The script moves along briskly and the choreography for the action scenes is very good. Yanin is especially good, and it is nice to see a new female martial arts star in the making. Fans of Ong-Bak, Chocolate or many of the other martial-arts style films will certainly enjoy this and it is recommended for fans of the genre or anyone into action films generally. Overall a good film and well worth checking this out on DVD or Blu-ray.
Extras: trailers, interview gallery, B-roll action scene footage.
