GarethMariaDirected by Ozgur Uyanik. Starring James Powell, Tom Shaw, Lorna Beckett Hugh Armstrong. UK, 80 mins.

DVD Release date 28th June 2010

A young man in his twenties is desperate to become a filmmaker but after he finds an old reel in the archives things start to go horribly wrong.

James is working as an intern and finds an old horror film reel in the archives that was never finished because the director committed suicide. He gradually becomes more and more obsessed with finishing the film but there seem to be constant obstacles from funding to accidents onset. James is frustrated that nobody else wants to help him achieve his dream and the climactic ending sees him actually living out the character from the film for real in a bid to finally complete it.

The reference to things such as video nasties and actual executions helped reinforce the idea that it was a real documentary. This is the main scare element -  "could this documentary be real and therefore could the film James was trying to finish have been real." the film had the potential to be really good but it failed in many aspects. It wasn't particularly frightening and the "film" clips were poor imitations of an 80's film.

Investigating the film and the actors from the original film would have added more to the film as they touch on weird things happening like the directors reflection in the window on the reel and when James hears a conversation off camera on the original film between director and actor stating "is she dead" suggesting that the original could have been a snuff movie!

James Powell gave a good performance as the wannabe film director but for the most part the acting was lacking in believability. The film wasn't realistic enough throughout to be truly frightening.

The idea behind the film is essentially a good one and done well would be really effective but it just seems that there was something missing.

Pretty standard extras, nothing spectacular. There is a trailer, test footage, deleted scenes and cast and crew interviews.

This is definitely a British film worth a watch if you are interested in mockumentaries although it's probably not on a par with Paranormal Activity.
