It's so good it's scary - The Guardian

The premiere event of the year for horror fans - Time Out

Directed by Vincenzo Natali. Staring Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac, David Hewlett, Brandon McGibbon. Cert. 15

Out on DVD, Blu-ray and EST - 29th September 2010.

In 1997, Canadian director Vincenzo Natali’s psychological thriller Cube became a minor hit. Jump ahead to 2010 and Natali’s latest project, Splice, further establishes him as a  cinematic talent.

Geneticists Clive (Brody) and Elsa (Polley) have built their careers on creating new genetic hybrids for their pharmaceutical employer. Their greatest achievement has been two slug-like creatures that seem to be a pair of genetic Fort Knox’s in terms of drug producing potential.

Not satisfied with slugs, Elsa adds human DNA into the mix. The result is Dren (nerd spelled backwards), a curious creature that incorporates the features of human, animal, and fish.

Call this an update of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, for Dren is very much the Modern Prometheus. Played by French actress Chanéac, Dren is the star of this film. Every bit the monster, she manages to be all at once engaging, sympathetic, unpredictable, and terrifying.

Thanks to Chanéac, Polley and Brody, Splice manages to establish a new standard for horror flicks. This film has managed to not only elevate the bar in terms of storytelling for the horror genre, but shown that compelling and engaging stories can be told within the confines of a so-called “monster movie”.
