For years, George Lucas’s computer games company ‘Lucas Arts’ just couldn’t get it right, developing game after game that never really satisfied the legions of Star Wars fanatics eager for more stories beyond the original trilogy. Then one day a new trilogy was released and an array of games followed that seemed to inspire those fanatics far more than the actual movies released in that period.
Stand out titles were the ‘Star Wars Lego’ games and a slightly darker offering - the 2008 release -‘The Force Unleashed’.
Now in 2010 – Darth Vader’s secret Clone Apprentice is back to avenge his master betrayal in the release of ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. For those who don’t know the back story, Darth Vader and Darth Serious stole a human Jedi child (Galen Marek), trained him for years as a Sith Lord to disrupt the birth of the rebellion and re-named him “Star Killer’. When his role was no longer needed ‘Sidious’ ordered Vader to dispose of him. Six months later Vader decided to secretly resurrect ‘Star Killer’ using the cloning process.
Picking up from where the last game ended (if you’ve completed it of course), ‘Star Killer’ is captured and imprisoned on the cloning planet of ‘Kamino’ awaiting his fate. Vader is keen to complete the Sith Lords training and offers him a chance to redeem himself. When faced with killing a droid disguised as his love interest (Juno Eclipse), Star Killer escapes the clutches of his Sith Lord Master.
The first ‘real’ game play is a short but brilliantly constructed falling scene dodging obstacles and Tie-fighters as ‘Star Killer’ makes his way to the platform below. I tend to find these moment a little annoying as it usually takes me about 50 attempts to get it right. In this game, I did it first time and I have to say I wish it had of been longer – it was so much fun. From here you’re taken through a series of tasks to teach you the powers you have at your disposal, but yet again, unlike other games this doesn’t slow down the pace or become annoying and frustrating.
Being a ‘Not so bad’ Sith Lord, ‘Star Killer’ has all the slickness of a Jedi Knight as well as the cool but dark powers of a Sith Lord – not to mention two LightSabers. These Powers include the famous Death grip, lightning from his hands and Jedi mind control. My personal favourite is the ability to stop a Tie Fighter in mid air, crush it into a ball and throw it at an approaching Stormtrooper. Whoever came up with that move deserves a medal – I could play with this power for hours.
As with the last game this is a brilliant extension to the Star Wars Universe – Lucas has created a new character that could be up there with the fan boy favourite Boba Fett. With established characters like Fett, Vader and Yoda all involved in the storyline ‘The Force Unleashed 2’ will keep both the old school die hards as well as the new generation of fans very happy.
The controls are easy to master and the game itself is well paced and slick in its scrolling - maintaining an exciting environment at all times. It’s a game for both religious gamers and anyone who just wants to pick up a game once in a while.
Everything is explained in the opening titles much like the films - so if you haven’t played the first game it won’t taint the experience of the second.
I’m sure ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2’ will find its way into many over 30’s stockings this Xmas – and rightly so, it’s great fun.
