After an attempt to satisfy the needs of two sisters, the last male in a small Serbian village dies. In order to save themselves and the spirit of their grandmother, the sisters embark on a wild journey to bring back a new man for the love-starved women of the village.

‘Tears For Sale’ is one totally insane and crazy movie… and that’s a good thing! I haven’t seen a film like this in a long time, and without trying to compare it to anything else (because I don’t think there is anything else like it) it just reminded me of the work of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Timur Bekmambetov. Director Uros Stojanovic is definitely a talent to watch. Shamefully there are no other titles to his credit yet, but watch this space. I’m sure of it.

The first thing you are going to notice about this film is just how visually stunning it is. It just has the power to blow you away from the opening shot (a fantastic digitally enhanced shot flying around and setting the scene). Although relatively unknown, it has the looks of a very high budget movie and should certainly stand out in the crowd. Amazing camerawork and stunning visual effects really help to create a unique vision. There are lots of dramatic close up shots on our main characters, plenty of very well placed slow-motion shots and enough tracking dolly and crane shots to put Michael Bay to shame. The film constantly uses these high powered and fancy visual tricks, but not at the expense of story, absolutely not. Story is the key focus here and the look of the film and some of the most inventive effects I have seen recently just help to keep the flow. There is no showing off here as far as I am concerned.

Sound is used in much the same way as the picture. Music and effects have been so well thought out and really go a long way to help create an imaginative atmosphere and give the film both a sense of realism and a sense of humour at the same time. The music alone is stunning to listen to, sounding like a classic orchestral score on such an epic level. It is so obvious that so much work has gone into these elements and it really shows. Watching the film quickly becomes a completely captivating experience.

The acting here is just perfect. The characters are such fun and the actors seem to have a great time with them. The performances really draw you in to the narrative. Some of the times they are very down to earth, others they are completely over the top. At times very subtle, at times completely outrageous. It all adds to the surreal nature of the film. You don’t feel the need to question what is occurring onscreen as the actors make it all seem so plausible. The story is very romantic and emotional and begins to take on a darker tone as it goes on. It’s just so much fun to follow the fantastic leading ladies on their journey. The two lead male actors are incredibly funny, but also bring such a huge realism to their roles. These fantastic people are sure to bring out all sorts of emotions in you while you watch. I am sure that even the most hardened horror fans will find both sadness and joy in this film.

There is a lot of dialogue and some may find this heavy going, especially for a foreign language and sub-titled film, but it flows so well that even if you miss some of the translated text you are still going to understand it all and be able to follow it well. It’s just one of those powerful experiences that you find yourself completely immersed in. There are probably some cultural differences and a lot of history that we don’t quite understand, but overall it’s a story that can interest all cultures and societies and should be enjoyed by every viewer. The thing I really love about it is that even the most simple dialogue scenes are shot with such flair that you just can’t help being constantly wowed with everything that happens onscreen.

You should seriously consider putting this one up at the top of your list of films to see. It’s very short and very enjoyable. I am quite sure that most audiences would find something to love about it. ‘Tears For Sale’ is a beautiful story told in a very beautiful way. It is a fantastic and magical experience. Go check it out!

Unfortunately the review disc had no extras whatsoever. A real shame as a glimpse behind the scenes on this production would be fantastic. At this time I am unsure what if any extras will be available on the retail disc. We can hope for some.
