Jess (Melissa George), a woman with an autistic son, meets up on her own with a small group of friends for a day out sailing on a yacht. Unfortunately things don’t go to plan and the yacht is hit by an electrical storm, forcing the friends to take refuge on a passing (and what appears to be deserted) cruise ship. Jess is convinced she has been on the ship before, and pretty soon after unexpected things start to happen.

The story really kicks into action once on the ship, as it becomes apparent that Jess has been there before. Jess thinks she sees someone, and after one of the group (Victor played by Liam Hemsworth) goes to investigate, its not long before he returns hurt and bleeding badly. A masked figure then appears and starts shooting at the rest of the group. Jess has to run and hide as she fights for her life. Eventually Jess has a confrontation with the masked figure, following which the story moves away from convention into a more complex time-twisting direction, as things start to loop back on themselves. From then on its impossible to say much more without spoilers, but the script is clever as things start to slowly come together and make more sense For anyone who has seen it, think ‘Timecrimes on a boat’ to give an idea of what to expect, although the two films stand up on their own individual merits.

The movie builds up the tension well, and there are some neat ideas and imagery as the plot keeps you guessing as to which way things will turn next. Melissa George gives an excellent central performance as Jess, who is driven by her maternal instincts to get back home to her son. The focus of the movie is around the story and Jess’s character rather than blood and violence. This is not a pure horror movie therefore, but crosses the boundaries of genres (horror/thriller/science fiction) so should appeal to a wide audience.

British director Christopher Smith (Creep, Severance) has crafted a solid and entertaining film which keeps you interested throughout. The story and characters are good and the time-loop structure of the film works very well, even if by the end you may still be wondering how to piece some of the parts together. With a running time of 95 minutes, this film is enjoyable and definitely worth watching and deserves a solid 3 stars.

Extras: not available to review but include: making of, commentary with Christopher Smith, storyboards, deleted scenes, special effects featurette.
