The plot and CGI gators were fairly ho hum.
If it had been directed by some studio hack this would have been totally generic and dull. But damn can Alexandre Aja direct, he definitely elevated it to another level and it looked amazing.
Made me want to go back and watch Switchblade Romance again.

Re: Bliss
The very shouty, sped up version of the hunger or Abel Ferrara's Addiction. undeniably brilliant central performance I always felt The Hunger and The Addiction could do with a bit more speed and shouting :) Personally I loved this, and although I agree to some extent about the wobble cam, I did fee...

Re: Nekrotronic
They'd obviously put a lot of thought into the concept, it looked nice, and it was competently directed.... but it was awful, a sweary Power Rangers with gore. Delivering shit dialogue in English with a European accent was always going to make Monica (Rita Repulsa) Bellucci seem hammy, but Jesus she...

Re: What Keeps You Alive
Definitely one of my favourites of the festival. I know there were a couple of obvious plot points She needs insulin, REMEMBER FOR LATER but all the twists and turns worked really well, and I loved the ending. It was definitely improved by being a same sex couple as it made the dynamic between them ...
Re: Upgrade
Really loved this one. Didn't hang about, some great fight scenes, and an 80s look and feel. Made a nice change of pace from a lot of the other films on. One of the only films of the weekend to get applause for the gore scenes.
Re: Heretiks
An endless boring cycle of: 1. Wander round dimly lit corridors exceptionally slowly 2. 'You ungrateful girl ! take her to (insert location)' 3. Demon appears and menaces unidentifiable nun in cell who does precisely fuck all and is then killed There might have been some good gore gags and make up e...

Re: Attack of the Adult Babies
I know you have to judge a film on it's merits, but if I'd known from the off that this was a 'fuck it our film's fallen through, let's go and make something cheap for the hell of it with no interference' type film then I would have judged it differently. It was moderately entertaining to watch, but...
Re: Cold Hell
Liked this one a lot. Fairly generic serial killer plot enlivened by interesting story turns, characters, and a kick ass heroine.
I loved the extra depth with her cousin's daughter, the incestuous father, and the cop's dementia Dad. Great stuff.

Re: Mayhem
I really wanted to like this more, it was fun, gory, had a good cast, and Joe Lynch did a great Q&A. But, it just didn't really grab me, something was just a bit off about the tone of it. It was too cartoony, the basic concept of the virus was just a bit stupid and half baked. I never for a seco...

Re: The Terror of Hallow's Eve
Loved the monster character designs and it was well put together, but pretty lacking other than that. The trickster death scenes felt like Nightmare on Elm Street supporting character dream deaths, but without any (limited) character backstories to support their method of elimination. The director s...

Re: Overall Thoughts
Had a great time this year, very happy to be back at the Empire, a better selection of films, and a good atmosphere in the main screen. I'd rather the arctic AC and wear more layers than it being too hot and have no options, but agree that the leg room was pretty tight. I was pretty down last year, ...
Re: Radius
I liked the basic concept and the first half was intriguing and pretty good. But then we got into identical twin sisters, telegraphed serial killer plots, and memory recall that arrived in chronologically convenient chunks to the service of the plot and it all got a bit overbaked and silly. Not a ba...

Re: Cult of Chucky
Thought this was ok, decent enough fun but pretty slapdash and needed more work. The kills lacked impact, Andy was wasted, and there were loads plot strands left hanging. Chucky seems to basically have limitless powers; he can possess whoever he likes, whenever he likes, as many times as he likes bu...

Re: The Villainess
Totally agree with what's been said. The opening and closing action scenes along with the samurai sword motorbike chase were amazing, although they were a bit shaky cam and the action geography was a bit off. But everything in-between was needlessly complicated and convoluted. The play she was in lo...
