London Film Festival 2016

Post by WraithApe »

The full programme was announced yesterday and I've been scouring it for the horror! I've picked out some of the most promising looking offerings which have a horror slant, or at least a dark vibe. As always, the Cult strand supplies most interest. The one that intrigues me most at present though is The Untamed - no real info on IMDb, but the BFI's synopsis is tantalising. No doubt missed a few, so feel free to add to the list.

Good call. I was expecting them to it, with Train To Busan obviously the no.1 S.Korean film of 2016 so far, The Wailing is no.3...

Are you going to LFF, sherbetbizarre (or anyone else)? I've about got my schedule sorted now. I'm going to give a few listed above a miss: A Dark Song (sounds kind of emo), Lake Bodum (cookie cutter, despite the attempts of the synopsis to give the opposite impression) and The Noonday Witch (meh). I'll be sorry to miss Moderation, which sounds genuinely interesting but it clashes with Phantasm Remastered and I ain't about to miss that!

A couple of others I'm planning to see - not horror, but possibly quite dark:

Una http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2315582/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
The Ghoul http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3613314/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_1

Also Werner Herzog's new documentary about the internet age, Lo and Behold. Cos who doesn't want to hear Herzog ragging on Twitter? :D

I can usually only afford one or two shows, but I will definitely be looking through the listing soon.

When do they go on sale to the public?

Member priority booking begins this Thursday, September 8th. Tickets go on sale to the general public a week later, on September 15th. This is the main reason I became a BFI member myself - I'd always find shows I was interested were sold out or had very few seats left when they went on general sale.

Cheers. I'm disappointed The Bad Batch isn't showing...

Some more I spotted:

Paul Verhoeven's ELLE http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3716530/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

Tower
An emotionally gripping and visually stunning account of the first American mass school shooting, in Texas in 1966, blending archive, animation and contemporary interviews.

- this event was also featured in Killing of America.

Prevenge
Alice Lowe directs and stars in this riotous tale of a pregnant serial killer, hellbent on revenge.

- the film we didn't get to see a preview of at FF!

Christine
Rebecca Hall gives a career-best performance depicting troubled life and very public death of Florida anchorwoman Christine Chubbuck, who committed suicide live on air in the summer of 1974.

Blue Velvet Revisited
A meditative collage of film, photographic and audio materials captured on the set of David Lynch’s iconic masterpiece.

The Void
Terror unfolds inside a deserted hospital in this nightmarish throwback to old-school creature features and practical monster FX. From the distorted imaginations of Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie, best known as part of the Astron-6 collective (Manborg, Father’s Day), comes a brand new slice of retro terror.

- already mentioned, but worth adding it's an Astron-6 production.

I think The Void is possibly the one I'm looking forward to most after seeing the poster :D

In addition to Blue Velvet Revisited, there's also a David Lynch documentary - appears to be more focused on his painting than film-making, but will no doubt be very interesting.

It's also weird that there are two films about the relatively obscure case of Christine Chubbuck in the festival (the other being Kate Plays Christine).

I knew there was another movie, but I didn't even spot it in the line-up, so cheers!

Great poster too.

Never been to Raindance. It follows too hot on the heels of LFF for my wallet's liking :D

I managed to score tickets to 18 films at LFF this year, so hopefully some good stuff in there! Missed out on Herzog, which was a total sell out, and The Autopsy of Jane Doe, which was also pretty over-subscribed. Seems to be a lot of buzz about that one - I'll be interested to read the reviews, maybe catch it if it comes out on general release later in the year.
