The Loved Ones

Post by jonbly »

This could have been awful... the promo pics suggests a real scenery-chewing performance from the father which could have been disastrous... but that's not how it pans out. The character restrains his emotions, and the film is probably better for it.

Well made and acted, with good pace... not sure about the prom date sequences, but perhaps it's just as well to slow the pace down on this one, and they do eventually serve the plot (though you could blink and miss it).

Really enjoyed it.

I loved this , thought the tone was just right , fun but not in a stupid screwball kinda way, I sat next to the two leads during the showing and they were giggling like children all the way through, and I couldn't help but smile as Robin McLeavy squirmed all through the giving of the prom dress scene, It was pretty grisly too ...if john hughes had made horror movies they woud have been like this

If you were going to stick around for any of the late night films, then this was the one worth missing the last train home for. Wasn't expecting too much from The Loved Ones so was pleasantly surprised with just how enjoyable it was. Funny and nasty (I was expecting to find an Eaten Alive/Death Trap alligator living under that trap door initially) this really was a proper full on late night Frightfest crowd pleaser. 8/10.

Best film of the festival, well made, acted, soundtracked. I feel sad for people who missed make it. A strange time slot maybe.

Great bit of smoke for drill on bone.

I loved every second of this film, the performances especially from the two actors that turned up, bless em, the music, the bad prom outfits, it had a lot of charm, which a lot of the movies didn't have

I really wasn't sure about this one to start with - and the first ten minutes or so didn't raise my spirits much. But, like quite a few other movies this weekend, once it got going.... (But surely the trick is to get going to start with?) Anyway, I enjoyed it overall, as it got steadily messier and more warped.

That song has now been added to my Spotify list (right after the flying tank music from the A-Team soundtrack!). The irony is that, yes, she is pretty enough, she's perfectly nice apart from being completely insane.

Awesome.

Despite the atrocious tortures on display I found 'The Loved Ones' to be a really tender film and it had an emotional depth to it on a par with both 'Monsters' & 'Red, White & Blue'. The attention paid to the relationships between the characters made it much, much more that just a blood spattered black comedy. And Robin McLeavey gets my vote for best actress in any film at this years Frightfest.

Loved The Loved One, the best actual "horror" film in the fest. Can't believe a film this good is going straight to DVD, a real shame.

In hindsight it should have played earlier, but at the end of a day that was supposed to have seen it preceeded by We Are What We Are, Kaboom and Serbian Film it made perfect sense. it's a pity that events scrambled this as it was light years better than the woeful damned by Dawn.

I was hoping that this wouldn't just be more boring torture porn and luckily that was the case. The film seemed to get the right balance of violence and comedy, plus visually I really enjoyed it. Someone commented on the prom scenes, but they were a hoot and didn't spoil the film but in gfact probably added to the atmisphere (unlike Dream House were the flashbacks just got in the way).

Funny movie. Would have done better without some of the torture but most of it was hilarious.
Good acting, funny and witty dialog, just the right amount of sweetness vs. total psycho
The "dancing scene" with his feet nailed to the ground made me cringe :)

Again (people might see a red line in my comments) I didn't like the last scene. Why couldn't they just show her crawl along the street (the noise the knife made on the asphalt, fuck me  ) and then get hit by the car, cut to black, roll credits, done. Why include that last Hollywood-mumishappy-letsallhug-bit?! If I ever show this to my frineds I'll make sure to hit STOP right there and then.

This i rather enjoyed. A psycho bitch who won't take no for a answer and keeps coming back! Great performances and some kick bottom action. One of the best late night films of the festival.

Best film of the festival in my opinion, such a shame it is going straight to DVD in the UK as it deserves to reach a wider audience.

If anyone is interested, I will be interviewing the director Sean Byrne very soon so if anyone has any questions about the film that they'd like answered then please post here (or PM me) and I'll put forward the best ones to him.

did he feel pressured to give it the happy ending? I am assuming it was an indie production so no studio interference .....
