Berberian Sound Studio
Re: Berberian Sound Studio
I quite liked this quirky curio, although it is likely to be doomed to be limited to niche appeal. It also made me want to see The Equestrian Vortex! My main criticism is the ending, which (to me at least) was unclear. Still, it was interesting to see how films (particularly sounds) were made at that time and the film was sufficiently engaging to stop me getting bored. 7 / 10
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Excellent production and sound design, a good leading performance and (surprisingly) some good humour, but all in the service of a film that went absolutely nowhere. 5 /10

Re: Berberian Sound Studio
From a film making perspective I thought it was excellent, something I'm sure will go down well in micky mouse degree course up and down the land.
But it isn't something I'd buy to watch with any great fondness or for further question/answer viewings.
A cold film that left me much the same way.

Re: Berberian Sound Studio
Really enjoyed them making the horror sound effects but the film was a bit overlong.

Re: Berberian Sound Studio
I found this one reasonably interesting and odd whilst watching. But in the days that followed, the more I think about, the more I think it was just a load of pretentious old twaddle. I've been thinking back also to what the director said in the Q&A. - A lot of big words, but without actually saying anything. A bit like the movie itself
Critics will no doubt tell me that I 'didn't get it'. But I'm a Giallo fan, so I spotted the references and I'm of reasonable intellegence having gained a degree back in the day. The thing is though, the more I think about it, the more I realise how dull and uneventfull the film was. Toby Jones was decent. He usually is. But it just wasn't really about anything, nor did it have any memorable scenes or set pieces like a good Giallo would
A shame that this got the big screen treatment whereas 'Amer' a couple of years ago and the short film 'Yellow' this year, were hidden away in the Discovery screen. Disappointing..

The Metro gave 5 stars to this today. They hardly ever give 5 stars, when they do it's almost always to odd films like this though.
Perhaps surprisingly they also gave 4/5 to Cockneys vs Zombies.

Yoinks!!
I'd agree with the "CvZ" rating, but I just don't get the love that "Total Film" and other publications have for this movie. I'm willing to bet that the aforementioned magazines will get tons of letters and mails criticising the review scores after people actually see it!!

Re: Berberian Sound Studio
It's bunk. Look, I like gialli, I like Argento, I like Italian horror movies, I like Goblin and I like Toby Jones. But this is a frustrating, annoying, pointless and tiresome Art movie that's really got nothing to do with any of them. Most disappointing film of the festival. And I wanted to like it.

Re: Berberian Sound Studio
Finally got around to reviewing this in the form of haiku (with a bit more exposition after...) I have to say, the film was pretty odd, but loved the sound design and camerawork. Never going to be in my Top Ten though...
