Berberian Sound Studio

Post by jonbly »

7/10 - interesting piece and very well made, but jonbly doesn't really get where this was going (if anywhere). Is it about the change in the lead character? Or is it just an off-beat documentary?

This might just be one for sound-effect nerds...

Emperor's New Clothes?

I don't know who Broadcast are, I don't care who Suzy Kendall is and I don't know what this film was about. A hugely frustrating experience...

After such a great introduction, what a massive let down. Just couldn't wrap my tiny mind around this one :(

Awesome soundtrack, amazing sets, superb acting, multiple sub-plots that confused me.

Definitely needs to be watched again.

Out of the six films I've seen so far... this is my favourite!

Apart from the last one, I completely agree, but I also was disappointed.
I'd have liked more of a sense that his exposure to the horror genre had consequences in the real world, and it seemed to be going that way right up until the white out finale. Probably the best made film of the ones I have seen this year, and Toby Jones was on top form, but that's just adding to my disappointment.

I have some friends who work in the music studio business, I shall recommend they watch this fine example of Equipment Porn :-)

Brilliant and hypnotic, a feast for the eyes and ears.

A rather esoteric and introspective film, seems like it's one you either "get" and think is the best thing ever, or you don't get it and you're just scratching your head and thinking "WTF?"

My take on things was that when the lead character started talking Italian, you realised the scenes in English where he was being bullied were actually scenes of the film they were making, and when he talking Italian was actually the footage of him in the studio, and he becomes one with the film at the end.....dunno if that's right though!

I think a film as esoteric as this would have been better in the Discovery Screen really, and they should moved something like Remnants, Guinea Pigs or We Are The Night from the Disco to the main screen to replace it.

My take was that he was a nice Home Counties boy gradually drawn into the corruption of horror films*, and driven mad.

And when he started talking Italian, it was a tribute to the Banarama song about Robert De Niro.
I kept accidentally calling it Berberian Sound Machine.

*Not too many people like that in the Frightfest crowd ... or are there?

Put me in the WTF category with this one,

Certainly well made and very pretty to look at, but it didn't make a great deal of sense to me.

Toby Jones was very good in it though.

What jonbly really wants to know is how this will play in Italy. For them, does he start off mad and get slowly driven sane?

I'm annoyed at myself for watching this until the end. Could have gone in so many directions with it but instead it just ended up being a nonsense fest. Showing sound dials with distorted screaming for an hour doesnt equal a good film.

File under pretentious self indulgent try hard crapola.

"Ponderous Mad Studio" ... or PMS for short.

Sorry. Didn't work for me.
Liked the beginning and concept (It was really an imaginary sound recording of Suspiria, wasn't it?).
But any film that inserts stock film burning into 5-bloody minutes of a fictious nature documentary, and an ending that means absolutely nothing, will never have me as a fan....
